1st Solids

Both Olivia and Gracelyn began "solids" around 5 1/2 months. With Olivia her pediatrician wanted me to try foods with her before the 6 month appointment. Gracelyn's pediatrician told me to start when she was ready. And for several weeks I could tell she was "ready." When anyone else ate she would smack her lips. If she was near food or a spoon she would reach for it. Still, I wanted her to be a bit older. But then she was nursing every two hours and acting so hungry that this past week we decided to try "solids." We started with a whole grain organic cereal mixed with breast milk at first to see if she liked the idea of eating. After a few bites and funny faces she loved it. She leaned her body forward, grabbed at the food with her hands, and would fuss if you didn't give her the food fast enough. Several days after trying cereal we introduced bananas. And of course she loves bananas. Next up is sweet potato and avocado.  I have washed my trusty Beaba food maker and am ready to feed Gracelyn.

Here is one of the first times Olivia ate (and spilled her bowl) and Gracelyn did the same thing! To me this picture really shows their personality. Olivia is holding her hands daintily and doesn't want to get messy. She is slowly taking in this new experience. Gracelyn is smiling and keeps putting her hands in the food and then in her mouth, very carefree!
